A sorry tale of an unsuspecting recently retired old man suddenly finding himself with time on his hands - but not for long
The day after I finished work - 35 years as an IT consultant in big corporate-land - I was out for a leisurely stroll. I mused on life's twilight stretching out before me. Days filled with golf, cruises (no, not really!) and excessive middle age, middle class alcohol consumption (quite likely!). I hadn't reckoned on meeting Jenny and Bruno!
"Well, as you now have nothing to do, we really need some help with our website!" says Jenny, beaming from ear to ear. With hindsight it was less a smile of joy but more of plaintive entreaty!
How hard can it be methinks, little realising what I was letting myself in for! After a brief exchange on the nature of the beast (no, not Bruno! His nature is well known to me and he is not to be trifled with, despite his diminutive stature!) I discovered the technology being used. I came across it 10 years previously (Drupal in case you're interested), played with it for a day and failed to grasp it. I still foolishly consented to dig a bit deeper. Maybe I could learn something new and stave of the inevitable mental decline associated with excessive cruising. In fact I'd built another website with something very similar. Again, how hard can it be!
My inner geek got the better of me and I came back with the positive response that Jenny sought. I couldn't promise a completion date (or, indeed, any completion at all) as I had a bit of learning to do. Heathcliffe had already made a start on the site's concept and design and had built an early prototype so I thought, maybe 3 or 4 months building on that with Heathcliffe's help and I'd be back on the golf course.
11 months later, here we are!
So, what happened next and how did we get to where we are? Where, in fact, are we? These will be the subject of upcoming installments.
